What If He Exists?
What if there really is someone for you?
I know.
Some days that feels almost ridiculous to believe.
Especially after all the almosts.
The people you tried to make it work with.
The ones you had to explain yourself to over and over again.
The ones you asked for flowers.
For effort.
For reassurance.
For a little more communication.
For a little more tenderness.
For the things that never felt particularly big to you, but somehow always seemed to be too much to ask for.
After a while, you start wondering whether the love you imagine only exists in your imagination.
But what if it doesn’t?
What if there is someone out there who will make you understand why it never quite worked before?
Someone who sees flowers at a market and buys them because they reminded him of you.
Someone who remembers the tiny thing you mentioned three weeks ago and surprises you with it when you’ve already forgotten you ever told him.
Someone who plans the date.
Makes the reservation.
Checks that you got home safely.
Someone who doesn’t make you wonder whether he likes you.
You know.
Because he makes sure you know.
What if there is someone who wants to hear the long version of the story?
Who laughs at the joke you’ve already told him twice.
Who knows from your face that something is wrong before you’ve said a word.
Someone who learns which silence means I’m okay and which silence means please come closer.
Someone who doesn’t roll his eyes when you cry.
He just reaches for you.
What if one day you meet someone who makes you realize that you were never asking for too much?
You were asking people who couldn’t give it to you.
Not because he’ll be perfect.
He won’t be.
Neither will you.
You’ll misunderstand each other.
You’ll annoy each other.
There will be bad moods and stupid arguments.
But underneath all of it, there will be something steady.
I choose you.
Again.
And again.
And again.
And maybe the most romantic things won’t even be the flowers.
Maybe it’ll be his hand reaching for yours in a crowded room.
Dancing in the kitchen while dinner gets cold.
Inside jokes nobody else understands.
A toothbrush beside yours.
His shoes somewhere they’re absolutely not supposed to be.
Your favorite things slowly becoming our favorite things.
And here’s the part I can’t stop thinking about:
If he exists, right now he’s a stranger.
You don’t know his voice.
You don’t know his laugh.
You don’t know what his hand feels like in yours.
You don’t know which song will become yours.
You don’t know the story you’ll tell when someone asks how you met.
There could be an entire person you will one day know by heart…
who today you wouldn’t even recognize if he walked past you.
And I think that’s beautiful.
Maybe one day you’ll look at him and wonder how there was ever a time when you didn’t know his face.
When you didn’t know his laugh.
When you didn’t know his name.
When all you could do was wonder:
What if he exists?
And somehow, somewhere, he did.
You just hadn’t met him yet.
